Light rail systems in the UK in times of the financial crisis
In these days of the world wird financial crisis UK-public bodies and cities are suffering even more in financial terms compared to other European countries. It becomes more and more difficult to realise large scale public transport projects. One of the main problems identified is the central way of financing projects by DfT. This article aims at representing the current status of exisiting and newly planned light rail systems in the United Kingdom as well as giving a tangible outlook into the sector’s future including questions such as the regulatory framework or project structure (PPP, DBOM, …). Harmonisation of light rail and metro infrastructure in Europe
The major goal of the European research project Urban Track is the development of harmonised urban light rail and metro infrastructure as well as harmonised maintenance methodology, which allow to considerably reduce life cycle costs. The third project year has come to an end in late summer 2009. The EC review of this third project year took place in November. „Congratulation to the project“ was the appraisement. Lifecycle costing of tracks and external effects
The major goal of the European research project Urban Track is the development of harmonised urban light rail and metro infrastructure as well as harmonised maintenance methodology against the background of significant reduction in LCC. For any new product or maintenance methodology developed within Urban Track the LCC must be proofed. Therefore an LCC calculation methodology according to the EN60300-3-3 was developed. Additionally a consideration of external effects is possible. The general acceptance of the methodology was emphasised. (Article in German)

Light rail in times of deregulation in the United Kingdom
After tramway systems in Great Britain had been demolished nearly completely in the 1950‘s, a short renaissance of light rail could be observed in the 1980‘s. Today, seven systems are operating in the United Kingdom. Deregulation of the public transport market made investment into cost intensive light rail systems more challenging again. Only in 2004, plans for several projects were put on hold by the central government in London. Unacceptable cost rises were quoted as a reason. This article aims at representing the current status of light rail systems in the United Kingdom as well as giving a tangible outlook into the sector’s future. (Article in German)

Standardization of Light Rails in Europe
LibeRTiN is the Light Rail Thematic Network (TN) on standardization and harmonisation of LRT funded by the European Commission under the 5th Framework Programme for Research and Development (Growth Programme). Partners of the LibeRTiN TN are the two major business associations representing mass transit operators and authorities (UITP) and the railway supply Industry (UNIFE) together with five major consulting companies specialised in the light rail domain (TTK, Atkins, AEA Technology, Die Ingenieurwerkstatt, SEMALY). TTK is Co-ordinator of the project. But the active participation of external experts is an integral part of this thematic network to reach consensus as far as possible in the 10 different working groups. (Article in German)

Evaluation of Duty Rosters as Leading Tools
Within the DiOS project (optimisation of duty roster planning) of the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB) an evaluation method was developed to determine the quality of the duty rosters in relation to social compatibility aspects. This article describes its structure and procedure. A comparison of two planning periods indicates a quality improvement of SSB’s duty rosters. (Article in German)
