Since 2024, TTK has been supporting WSP Finland Oy on several tramway projects in Finland, particularly in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The aim of this collaboration is to shed light on the practices and regulations in force in various European cities with efficient tramway networks.
As part of this, TTK is conducting technical benchmarks on several key aspects of tramway operations, such as permitted speeds when passing through points, the relationship between the maximum speed of trams and that of private vehicles on parallel sections, and the operational rules applicable to points.
The studies are based on an analysis of regulatory and technical documents from various countries, as well as detailed network maps. They are further enriched by interviews with operators and infrastructure managers from several key cities in French- and German-speaking Europe, notably Nantes and Tours in France, Karlsruhe and Mannheim in Germany, and Basel and Zurich in Switzerland.
Thanks to this comparative approach, WSP Finland has gained an in-depth understanding of the solutions implemented in different operational contexts. This expertise helps inform discussions on the development of future Finnish tramway projects and identify best practices suited to local challenges.
