Sfax (Tunisia): what development for cycling and walking ?

On 27 January, TTK led a cooperation workshop organised jointly with the CODATU NGO.
The participants from varied backgrounds (elected officials, civil servants, academics, civil society), were invited to discuss the major challenges of developing walking and cycling in the country's second largest city. The first objective of this workshop was to determine the main actions to be implemented to develop cycling and walking in Sfax. In a second part, participants were invited to work on the basis of maps to determine the priority routes to be developed for bicycles and pedestrians as well as the major existing points of difficulty. Riadh Haj Taieb, Director General of Major Urban Projects, and Mounir Elloumi, Mayor of Sfax, stressed the importance and interest of the municipality in the development of non motorised transports and more specifically cycling and walking in order to offer alternatives to the individual car.

TTK has been supporting the municipality of Sfax in the development of cycling and walking since May 2021. This accompaniment is carried out within the framework of the Urban Transport mentoring project resulting from the Interreg MED Programme with ERDF funding. This mentoring programme aims to share experience between different municipalities around the Mediterranean. In this project, the municipality of Sfax benefits from the experience of the municipality of Misano Adriatico (Italy) on the development of cycling and walking.
